2011Last February, on the day after Valentine's Day, Monisha arrived at Jessie's Place. Monisha had been working full-time to support herself and her children but, like so many others, had lost her job. She took a temporary job to help make ends meet, but it was not enough, and she lost her home too.

Monisha and her kids
at Jessie's PlaceRelying on her family, Monisha moved in with her grandmother, but after her grandmother passed away, Monisha had nowhere to go. Monisha shuffled around, staying with whoever would open their doors for her, but nothing was permanent. That was when she came to Jessie's Place...

2011A local office supply store helps supply hope to those who need it most...

Scott Bruce of Bruce Office Supply
presents Tony Cooper with a checkThe local office supply store, Bruce Office Supply & Furniture in Birmingham, recently helped supply the Jimmie Hale Mission. But instead of providing paper or staples, they helped supply meals.
Bruce Office Supply recently ran a special promotion where for every $100 a customer spent, Bruce would donate $10 to the Jimmie Hale Mission. Before the transaction, Bruce let customers know of this promotion, allowing them the choice to participate and they also allowed customers to participate more than once.
When it was over, Bruce had collected $780.00 to donate to the Jimmie Hale Mission. That translates to 400 meals donated to Birmingham's homeless and hungry!
Scott Bruce, President of Bruce Office Supply, along with Paul Hozey (also with Bruce), presented the check to Mission Executive Director Tony Cooper.
The Mission is greatly appreciative of the support shown by Bruce's and by all of the other local businesses that help bless us. Thank you!

2011Children of all ages from the surrounding Birmingham area helped give others a happy holiday season...
This holiday season, the Jimmie Hale Mission held it's annual Holiday Placemat Project. The Placemat Project encourages those young and young-at-heart to color in a placemat to give to the homeless men, women and children of the Jimmie Hale Mission ministries. Through this project, children can give hope to those who need it most.
Thank you to all who participated and sent in their placemats - schools, church groups, Sunday School classes, home school groups and many more helped make this project more successful than ever.
Schools like Vernon Intermediate had their entire 5th grade help out. Ms. Faulkner's classes have provided placemats for several years and her students were happy to help!

5th graders from Vernon Intermediate School colored placemats and
even conducted a loose-change drive to help feed the hungryHere are just a few of the many wonderful placemats we received:

2011Homeless has been in the national spotlight lately, but Birmingham has it's own success stories...
Homelessness has been a spotilght in the national news this week, covering the man 'with the golden voice' and his sudden success. However, we at the Jimmie Hale Mission know that just because you're down-and-out doesn't mean you can't be up-and-coming. We see that same kind of continual hope everyday.
National news coverage of the homeless man whose voice went viral on YouTube highlights what we see everyday at the Jimmie Hale Mission in our own area. Success stories of folks who where down on their luck, but are now up-and-coming.

Matthew, shown studying in the Learning Center,
is one of our local success storiesStories like Matthew and Larry. Matthew had nowhere else to go when he came to the Mission. Now is he enrolled at Jefferson State Community College and hopes to study nursing. He wants to help others as he has been helped. Larry came to the Mission worried about his future. After successfully completing our recovery program and learning center, he is hopeful about his future and will begin attending culinary school in just a few days.
According to the Jimmie Hale Mission's Executive Director Tony Cooper, "Most of the people coming to us for help have already graduated from the 'School of Hard Knocks' and now are enrolled in what we like to call 'Back to Life University.'"
Both men were in similar situations as the homeless man with the golden voice who has received national attention for his golden voice. But these Birmingham men show that even without national media attention, just because you're down-and-out, doesn't mean you're without hope.
Thanks to the support of caring donors, the Jimmie Hale Mission has been blessed to help over
400 people secure employment over the last three years. Please share this with your family and friends on...
