2011Years ago when I was growing up, I remember the Oakland Raiders football team and how successful and respected they were. In their locker room they displayed the team motto, “Striving for Excellence.” I can remember thinking that they were working hard to live up to their motto, and it seemed to be paying off.

Strive for Excellence in all you do!Excellence is defined as, “to surpass others or be superior in some respect; remarkably good; extraordinary.” Excellence doesn’t mean perfection, that would be unrealistic. However, it does mean to excel; to give it your all and to do your best. Like the U.S. Army slogan from a few years ago that said, Be all that you can be!
Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” The Apostle Paul seems to be saying, “Do your best; give it your all; strive for excellence!”
Striving for Excellence at our Stewart Learning CentersThe second part of the phrase says to eliminate excuses. Excuse here is defined as , “to overlook a fault; to remove the blame of; to attempt to justify; to release from obligation; attempt to sugar coat irresponsibility.” I refer to an excuse as a poor and inadequate attempt to offer a legitimate reason for a lack of performance. How often have we allowed excuses to get in the way of success?
Our motto this year at the Jimmie Hale Mission ministries is “Striving for Excellence – Eliminating Excuses.” As we attempt to live out this slogan, we pave the way for responsible behavior and set the stage for growth, productivity and success!
