for the kids at Jessie's Place

We all know the song "Jesus loves the little children," and taking a lesson from this song, we like to celebrate God's love by throwing a Valentine's Day party for the homeless children of Jessie's Place.

This year's celebration will include several fun activities for the kids, including a magician with the ever-popular "Scooter the Rabbit," and Valentine-themed food, games and art projects.  The staff at Jessie's Place has also done a great job decorating the facility to make it as fun as possible for the kids.

    for Valentine's Day

"We are so excited about Valentine's Day at Jessie's Place," said Dr. Malissa Smitha, director of Jessie's Place.  "It is a very fun event."

If you would like to the kids celebrate God's love, then we encourage to send in a Valentine's Day card to the boys and girls of Jessie's Place.  They will be so excited to see how many people care about them.  This small gesture will make a big diifference in the hearts of hurting and homeless children. Click here to get your Valentine card to send it to the children of Jessie's Place at 2305 5th Ave N., Birmingham, AL 35203.

  •      Christmas may be over, but the donations to Jessie's Place of the Jimmie Hale Mission will help in the year to come.

Christmas 2010 is now a memory.  But the gifts given to Jessie's Place this year will make a big difference in the coming year.

A local group, the Alabama Chapter of the International Interior Design Association, found out what a blessing it was to give to Jessie's Place, a shelter for women & children in Birmingham.  Jennifer Andrew who is with the group that organized this giving project said "I was shocked.  We have two van loads of stuff, and you hear the economy is bad, but people really dug deep this year."

IIDA members Ellen Hawley, Tabitha Sequeira
    and IIDA president Ashley Handley
unload their donations at Jessie's Place

A group made up of architects and interior design businesses, also known as the IIDA, joined forces to collect items for the shelter.  Ashley Handley, the president of IIDA said "They give women a second chance.  Sometimes life throws you a curve ball, and you want someone to help you... that's what Jessie's Place does."

Jessie's Place is about renewing lives, and on that day with two van loads of things donated, it was a Merry Christmas at Jessie's Place.  According to Ashley Handley," We have over 32 companies that participated.  We have $700 in cash.  We have everything from jump drives to paper, clothing, everyday essential items - shampoo to diapers."

According to Dr. Malissa Smitha, the director of Jessie's Place, "The donations that come to Jessie's Place are just huge blessings to so many homeless children and homeless mothers.  Basically, it's the way we provide for Christmas.  It's a wonderful gift to families who would otherwise not have anything."

Some of the items donated by IIDA

For people like Eulatine Burtrom, these donations make Jessie's Place a great place to start over.  According to Burtrom, "It's nothing I pictured a shelter to be.  Once you get in, it's a home away from home."

Faith is what keeps the Christmas spirit in the hearts of those at Jessie's Place for both those giving... and for those receiving.

  •       Shamera and her children, like most people, had never been in a shelter before. When they first arrived at Jessie’s Place, they felt scared and alone and surrounded by strangers, away from the familiarity of their home.

Shay now has a safe home for her two boys,
and works as the catering manager for a local restaurant

As a mom though, Shamera felt she had to leave “home.” She was determined that her children would escape the volatile and violent situation they were living in. The last straw was when Shamera’s twin boys, Delontae and Marquise, witnessed a violent shoot-out in their own home. They were only 10 years old when it happened.

Her cousin told her about Jessie's Place and helped her get there. Though they were all scared, she recalled that her boys were brave, saying they were okay knowing Mom was there.

But Shamera, affectionately called “Shay” by all the ladies at Jessie’s Place, worked hard to make the best of her environment. Only two weeks after first arriving...click here to read the rest of Shay's story

"Because of Jessie's Place, my faith is renewed."

  •      Jessie's Place, the shelter for women and children of the Jimmie Hale Mission, held a tour open to all members of the community.

Jessie's Place Program Coordinator Stephanie Bales
leads the tour into the playroom

Jessie's Place recently held an "I Had No Idea" tour at their facility.  The tour began at 10 a.m. and had a great turn-out of friends and supporters of the Jimmie Hale Mission ministries.

Tour attendees got a behind-the-scenes look at
the Jessie's Place ktichen and learned how they could help

The tour began on the first floor of the facility and attendees got a behind-the-scenes look at what we do, how we give a hand up and not a hand out, and how they could help as volunteers.  Tour attendees even got to go upstairs and see the rooms we have for families and the learning center on campus at Jessie's Place.

Tour guests like Melanie McDowell (L) and
Penny McElwan (R) got a view of the counseling offices

We are so appreciative of everyone who came out to learn more about the Mission.  We hope you will visit our Tours and Presentations page to learn more and that we will see you at a tour very soon!
