    Getting craft-y at Jessie's Place

When someone from the Jimmie Hale Mission talks with a potential volunteer, we cover the usual ways to help: serve meals, conduct a drive, etc.  But we always end by telling people that they come create their own ways to help - and one group did just that!

Volunteers with the Morgan United Methodist Church Youth Group decided to get craft-y with the kids of Jessie's Place.  They wanted to help the children by providing them with a fun craft project to do that everyone could get involved in.

Armed with beads, markers and colorful strings the group arrived and got right to work.  Kids soon lined the tables in the Jessie's Place dining hall as they worked on their projects; most of the girls made bracelets while some of the boys worked on decorating sports pieces.

  •      Students from Helena Middle School visit Jessie's Place to learn more about homelessness...

    from Helena Middle School

8th grade students from Helena Middle School were working on a project for school, where the students acted as reporters and brought their information back to share with their fellow students.  We were honored to be chosen for one such group's project.

A group of young ladies from Helena Middle School decided they wanted to do their project on homelessness and the Jimmie Hale Mission; they wanted to teach their peers about the true causes of homelessness and that people of all ages can help.

The girls conducting the research were Hanna Anderson, Maddie Walker and Beth-Anne Brown.  They recently visited Jessie's Place, the women and children's shelter of the Jimmie Hale Mission and sat down with several clients and asked questions about their life, what led them to Jessie's Place and what their plans for the future were.  They also interviewd a Jessie's Place staff member, LaTonya, and also learned about the Mission and Jessie's Place from a different point of view.

The girls also volunteered as part of their project, wanting to gain hands-on experience.  Joined with some of their friends and family, they even served a meal to the homeless and hurting at the Mission.

Thank you so much to these young ladies who expressed an interest in helping others through advocacy at their school.  We think they get an "A+ !"

  •      There was fun for all ages at the Jessie's Place "Family Reunion"...

Ladies that helped make this event possible:
Lisa Richburg, Sarah Swihart, Margie Eubanks, Malissa Smitha
(JP Director) and Bridget Carter (Mission board member).

Jessie's Place, the women and children's shelter of the Jimmie Hale Mission, is proud to have a strong alumni program.  Clients that successfully graduated from Jessie's Place and moved onto their own jobs and houses, often come back for friends, emotional support, continued Bible study and to mentor to others currently in the program.

On Saturday, Jessie's Place held a "Family Reunion" Spring Festival as a chance to get alumni, current clients, volunteers, staff and friends together to enjoy some food, fun and fellowship.

Mission board members and other volunteers helped serve a picnic-style lunch to everyone that included hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, chips and much more.  The kids swarmed the sno-cone machine that was available - there were lots of blue and purple smiles that day!

The adults had a chance to meet new and old friends, relax and fellowship together.  The kids played on the Jessie's Place playground and really enjoyed the bouncy house that was provided for them.

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers and supporters who helped make this event possible.  This event definitely brought smiles to the faces who needed it most!

Thanks to other volunteers who were not pictured above, but were vital to this event: Perryn Carroll (Mission board member), Pat & Tynette Lynch, Ann Pennington (former board member), Lynnette Davis, Shawn Grubb, Denise Gaskin, Kris Dekker, Gary Eubanks, and Christalan Douglas.
