Why Do YOU Give?

Tribute (in honor of) Gifts

We are always thankful to receive cherished gifts in honor or in memory of a family member, friend, business associate, or other significant person in your life.

A tribute gift is a great way to honor someone while helping the homeless. Some of our donors and volunteers will even ask their friends and family to make a donation to the Mission in lieu of a birthday, anniversary or Christmas gift.

What's the gift you give a person who has everything? A tribute gift!

To make a tribute gift* in honor of someone special, please contact our business office 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday or mail us a donation with a note indicating your tribute.

*Tribute gifts must be a minimum of $25 for the honoree to receive an acknowledgement.

Memorial (in memory of) Gifts

A meaningful way to remember someone special is to give to a gift in his or her memory.

Memorial gifts to the Mission are often requested by grieving families in lieu of flowers. When you make a memorial gift to the Mission, we will notify* the family of the deceased of your thoughtfulness and generosity at your request.

To make a donation in memory of family or friends, you may contact us Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., or you may mail your donation with the note indicating the name of the remembered and the name and address of the person to be notified* of your gift.

*Memorial gifts must be a minimum of $25 for a notification to be sent.

Leadership Giving: Faith, Hope & Love Society

At the Jimmie Hale Mission, we receive all sizes of donations in many different ways. From a check sent by a corporation at Christmastime to a child’s pennies saved to donate to a worthy cause, we appreciate each and every gift we receive.

However, there is a special place for those donations that demonstrate fervent support for our mission by members of the community. These partners are our leaders in giving.

The Faith, Hope & Love Society seeks to recognize our leadership donors as partners in our mission to help the homeless, hungry and hurting in the Birmingham area. The Faith, Hope & Love Society is open to partners who give over $1,000 in a single year. These three levels: Faith is $1,000-$4,999, Hope is $5,000-$14,999, and Love is $15,000 and above.

Leadership Giving: Faithful Friends Society

Likewise, the Mission is blessed with donors who faithfully give regardless of the amount.

Our Faithful Friends Society is made up of donors who have given 50 times or more at various levels.

A great example is a widow who could only afford to donate $20 a month, but she faithfully gave every month. Over the course of 20 years, her donations totaled nearly $5,000. Every little bit adds up!

We deeply appreciate the members of our giving societies. Their partnership and dedication are essential to the success of our ministries.

Legacy Giving: 1944 Society

The third arm in our giving program is planned giving. The 1944 Society was created to recognize partners who want to leave a legacy of giving at the Jimmie Hale Mission. These donors enable the Mission to continue helping people for many years to come by making provisions for the Mission in their will or estate plan.

One exciting aspect of the planned giving tract is our Charitable Gift Annuity. CGAs allow you as a donor to make a tax-deductible gift to the Mission while receiving income for the remainder of your life.

For more information on Charitable Gift Annuities or any of our giving societies, please contact our development office at (205) 323-5878.

Naming Opportunities

Naming opportunities are still available on the new campus of our Shepura Men's Center.

For years, the Mission was housed downtown on 3rd Avenue North. A few years ago, the leadership realized that this facility was outdated and too small to meet the growing needs of homeless men in our area. We were fortunate to be granted some land and a building by the City at the 3400 block of 2nd Avenue North – the old Thomas School property.

Shamefully, this historical place was definitely showing its wear—overgrown shrubbery, broken windows, a dilapidated roof and squatting vagrants made the property most undesirable. However, with much vision and God’s blessing, we now have a completed site to call our home. The renovated three-story school building is now as our men’s dormitory, and the additions to the campus includes a multi-purpose building with kitchen and dining hall, a chapel, an administration and education building, and recreational features.

While funds were raised early on, the Mission is currently undergoing a non-traditional capital campaign to fund the remainder of the endeavor. Here are a few of the naming opportunities still available for your consideration:

$5,000 counseling office
$7,500 smaller sleeping room
$10,000 clothing distribution or medium sleeping room
$15,000 staff housing suite
$20,000 large sleeping room or gazebo
$50,000 kitchen or dining hall
$100,000 covered basketball/recreation/meeting area
$250,000 multi-purpose building
$250,000 education and administration building

If you are interested in naming a building, suite or room after yourself, your family, or in honor or memory of someone special, please call (205) 323-5878. You may also see a Naming Opportunities brochure (at the bottom of this page) for details.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Did you know that corporate matching can double or even triple your gift to The Jimmie Hale Mission?

The process may be as simple as completing a standard matching gift form from your employer* and mailing it to The Jimmie Hale Mission along with your gift. The potential for increased gift income is great, and, with donors taking an active role, many companies can realize the importance of supporting the Mission through matching gifts.

Consider this: Companies, sometimes through corporate foundations, will match employee gifts to nonprofits with ratios as high as three-to-one. In other words, the company will contribute $3 for every $1 given by the individual. So, if an employee chooses to donate $1,000, in conjunction with the corporate matching gift program, the total gift would be $3,000.

If you are interested in taking advantage of your company's matching gift program*, please contact our business office at (205) 323-5878. We can find out if your company has a matching gift program and what you need to do to utilize this exciting benefit.

*If your company does not presently participate, ask your human resources director how you can help start a corporate matching program. It is a great way to put your dollars (and your employer's) to work in Birmingham.

In-kind Gifts

Dictionary.com defines in-kind as "paid or given in goods, commodities, or services instead of money."

In-kind gifts to the Jimmie Hale Mission could range from a tube of toothpaste to stocks and bonds. For several decades, caring groups and individuals have supported the work of the Mission with in-kind donations. If you are interested in donating stocks, bonds or other securities, please contact the Mission's business office at (205) 323-5878.

Your gently-used clothes, furniture and household items may also be donated as in-kind gifts to Mission Possible Bargain Centers near you.

If you would like to conduct a food drive or other donation drive, please read the next section below.

Donation Drives

Drives are excellent to help us meet needs in easy and pratical ways. Take a look at the lists below and think about how much of those items you or your family goes through in a month. Now imagine having to provide the basics for more than 200 people on a daily basis.

  • Food Drive - canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned soups, instant potatoes, boxed cereal, rice
  • Paper Product Drive - paper towels, paper napkins, toilet paper
  • Toiletries Drive - toothbrush, toothpaste, disposable razors, shaving cream, stick deodorant
  • Warm Clothing Drive - gloves, socks, coats, hats/beanies
  • Laundry Detergent Drive - any kind will do

Schools, offices, churches and other such groups enjoy conducting drives to provide team-building and promote corporate altruism. Each individual's item, when grouped with a team effort, can add up to a lot.

For more information about donation drives, please see the downloadable PDF at the bottom of this page or contact Terry Preston at (205) 323-5878.

Charitable Payroll Deduction

You may be able to designate a portion of your paycheck to help the work of the Mission.

If your company or organization encourages United Way charitable payroll deductions, you can DESIGNATE your deduction to go to the Jimmie Hale Mission even though we are not a United Way agency.

We may be listed under our legal name, Downtown Jimmie Hale Mission, Inc.
